CFP: Alternate Histories: An Interdisciplinary Symposium

Wednesday, March 7th, 2018, University of Manitoba Institute for the Humanities

The narratives of history permeate our present moment, woven into our popular television shows, shared in articles, videos, and memes on social media, reinvigorated in activist movements and discussed in our classrooms. Recovering lost, forgotten and suppressed histories, imagining alternative historical timelines and bringing new technologies to bear on the study of history, scholars across the disciplines are engaging in the critical work of exposing and exploring the many alternate histories that are woven into our current society.

For this one-day symposium, the members of the Alternate Histories Research Cluster at the University of Manitoba’s Institute for the Humanities invite paper proposals for 15 minute presentations that engage with the broad topic of alternate histories. Topics may include but are not limited to the following:

  • gendered and queer approaches to history
  • indigenous histories
  • oral culture and storytelling
  • history in popular culture (films, television, video games, social media)
  • new technologies in the study of history
  • legal history
  • visual and art history
  • alternative historiographies (secret histories, community histories, cultural histories, labour history)
  • speculative fiction and creative histories
  • environmental history

Send 250 word abstracts along with a short bio to and by December 15th, 2017.
