The Robson Hall Animal Rights Forum Presents:
Animal Rights Advocacy with Dr. Mary Shariff
Monday, Feb. 10, 2020, 12:00 – 1:00 p.m., Room 206, Robson Hall
Animal advocacy efforts aimed at improving the lived experience of non-human animals frequently engage with the law, encountering different legal systems, processes, and players. These encounters – whether welfare or rights oriented – take on many forms including litigation, the seeking of intervener status, participation in legislative hearings, political lobbying, and the use of documentaries, film and other media.
This discussion will look at animal advocacy strategies within the broader rubric of Legal Strategy and Legal Strategy theory in order to provoke greater clarity with respect to how the operation of law engages with non-human animals and the humans working to protect them. In so doing, it is hoped that such study may illuminate new socio-legal pathways to shift the animals as property status quo.
