Archives and Stories with Omushkego Storyteller Louis Bird

University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections

Since the 1970s, Louis Bird, a distinguished Indigenous storyteller and memory keeper, has been recording the stories and memories of Omushkego (Swampy Cree) communities along western Hudson and James Bays. Using digital and analogue technologies, he has created a large archive of recordings to support his memory work as a storyteller.Join us for a very special afternoon of stories and discussion about how Louis has made use of western technologies and archival practices in addition to traditional oral transmission practices in order to keep his culture vibrant.

Sponsored by the Centre for Creative Writing and Oral Culture, the Master’s Program in Archival Studies and the University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections.
