BOLD IDEAS
A Special Three-Part Bold Ideas Colloquium Series on War, Peace and Health
Part III: Disability and Conflict
FRIDAY, JUNE 10, 2022 | 12:00-1:30 PM
The invasion of Ukraine has reawakened us to war’s devastation, disruption, and its impact on populations, locally and globally. The third talk of this series is co-hosted by Community Health Sciences, Centre for Disability Studies, the College of Rehabilitation Sciences, and the Max Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, Office of Interprofessional Collaboration.
Dr. Joseph Kaufert, Community Health Sciences
Dr. Nancy Hansen, Centre for Disability Studies
Dr. Taru Manyanga, University of Northern British Columbia
Dr. Reg Urbanowski, College of Rehabilitation Sciences
Dr. Moni Fricke, College of Rehabilitation Sciences and Office of Interprofessional Collaboration
The United Nations Security Council has recently acknowledged that people with disabilities are disproportionately impacted by armed conflict but often are left off peace, security and humanitarian agendas. To counter this violation, this talk opens with an introduction by Dr. Reg Urbanowski on human rights and the need for an intersectoral approach to understand disability, conflict and migration. Three perspectives then follow to shed light on the impact of armed conflict on peoples with disabilities. Dr. Joseph Kaufert provides a personal reflection on lessons learned from the past on disability and war. Dr. Nancy Hansen then provides a human rights perspective, advanced through disability studies, on disabled people in the context of armed conflict (e.g., Belfast). Next, Dr. Taru Manyanga gives a professional and personal narrative on providing rehabilitation services to those impacted by war and conflict. In closing, Dr. Reg Urbanowski considers the need for long-term services in support of human value and social-health justice for diverse communities in war and post peace societies. Dr. Moni Fricke reinforces the need to strengthen interprofessional collaboration.
