Indigenous Scholars Speaker Series featuring Todd Duhamel

Topic: Enhancing recovery protocols for people undergoing cardiac surgery

Location: 200 Education Building

Todd Duhamel is Métis and was born and raised in Atikokan, Ontario. As a child, Todd often visited his father’s extended family in Winnipeg and Ste. Anne, Manitoba and his mother’s Swedish settler family in Sioux Narrows, Ontario. Todd then completed academic (B. Sc. M. Sc. and PhD) training in Kinesiology at the University of Waterloo and postdoctoral training in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba. Todd is now a Professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management and a Principal Investigator in the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, St Boniface General Hospital Albrechtsen Research Centre. His research examines the role of physical activity for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease.

This talk will discuss Todd’s research on protocols used to enhance recovery for people undergoing cardiac surgery and will identify examples of how biomedical research will benefit from Indigenous knowledge and lived experiences to better inform cardiovascular care protocols and outcomes.
