Jacob Scheier, the University of Manitoba Centre for Creative Writing and Oral Culture’s current writer in residence, will host a discussion with prominent Canadian writers whose work explores and engages dis/ability: poets Therese Estacion and Alex Williamson, writer and editor Rebecca Salazar, and literary critic and poet Shane Neilson. The panelists will discuss how they embody a disability consciousness in their writing, and in particular how their poetry challenges able-bodied standards of poetic form. The panelists will also discuss how their “crip-poetry” calls into question traditionally held and able-bodied-centric ideas of what makes for a “good” or quality poem, and, ultimately, what the cultural and social significance is of “cripping CanLit.”
