Dr. Doug Coulson, “Threat Construction and the Migration of Whiteness in U.S. Naturalization Law during the Early 20th Century”
Doug Coulson is an Assistant Professor in the Rhetoric Division of the English Department at Carnegie Mellon University, where his research and teaching focuses on legal rhetoric and writing, argumentation, and the history and theory of rhetoric. Before entering academia, he spent nearly a decade as a practicing litigator in the United States. His first book, Race, Nation, and Refuge: The Rhetoric of Race in Asian American Citizenship Cases, was published by SUNY Press on October 1 of this year. He has also published scholarly articles in the Yale Journal of Law and the Humanities, Rhetorica: A Journal of the History of Rhetoric, and the Journal of the Association of Legal Writing Directors, and he continues to author annual updates to legal practice guides regarding business and commercial litigation.
