english_studyLiterature, film, and theatre provide unique perspectives on what it means to be human. Accordingly, most courses offered in the department of English, Film & Theatre encourage students to think critically about moral, social, and political issues related to human rights and the human condition, both in the past and in the present. Many upper year courses in the department focus specifically on human rights issues and are taught by faculty members whose research interests are central to discussions of human rights. Recent courses examining such matters as colonialism and post-colonialism, representations of genocide, minority rights,  women’s rights, and animal rights include Representations of War: 1900-present, Writing and Gender, Literature of Africa & the Caribbean, Realism and Film, and International Cinema.
