Employment and Internship Opportunities

The Centre for Human Rights Research is looking to hire a student research assistant to work during the summer months documenting the transportation needs and experiences of women and gender diverse individuals upon release from institutions (ex. correctional facilities, medical facilities). This work will include a comprehensive literature review (including scholarly literature, grey literature, and popular media), as well as a review of institutional policies and practices, and more international frameworks such as the UN Safe Cities Initiative. The emphasis will be on the needs and experiences of Indigenous women and gender diverse folks, complementing the work of Missing the Bus: Indigenous Women and Two-Spirit Plus People and Public Transit in Western Canada. This work is firmly rooted in a commitment to the MMIWG2S+ National Action Plan and the Calls to Justice.

The position requires experience in conducting literature reviews, and an interest in social justice and/or city planning issues. Candidates must be students enrolled (full or part-time) at a university or college in Manitoba. Preference will be given to graduate students, or undergraduate students nearing completion of their degree. Preference will also be given to Indigenous candidates (First Nation, Metis, and/or Inuit) – we strongly encouraged applicants to self-identify at the time of application.

The wage will be $18-$20/hour based on qualifications. Students will work approx. 10-15 hours a week (for a total of approximately 160 hours for the position). This position will be remote, though there may be some times where in-person meetings are preferred.

CHRR is committed to the principles of equity, diversity & inclusion and to promoting opportunities in hiring for systemically marginalized groups who have been excluded from full participation at the University and the larger community including Indigenous Peoples, women, racialized persons, persons with disabilities and those who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+. If you require accommodation supports during the recruitment process, please let us know. Application materials, including letters of reference, will be handled in accordance with the protection of privacy provisions of “The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act” (Manitoba). Please note that curriculum vitae will be provided to participating members of the search process.

Interested applicants can submit a cover letter and resume to chrrman@umanitoba.ca. The deadline to submit applications is May 2, 2024.
