Winonna Gabriel

Student Researcher

Winonna Gabriel (she/her) is an Anishinaabekwe from Ebb and Flow First Nation in Manitoba. She is currently a first-year law student at Robson Hall and received her Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Manitoba in 2023. Previously, Winonna was a research student at First Nations Health and Social Secretariat of Manitoba where her research focused on analyzing Canadian intellectual property laws and their implications for the protection of First Nations’ traditional knowledge and traditional cultural expressions. In addition to her role at CHRR, Winonna is involved in language revitalization efforts at the University of Manitoba where she is a research student on an initiative that supports the launch of a new micro diploma in Indigenous languages.

Her research interests include Indigenous rights, Indigenous legal orders and methods, and Indigenous sovereignty and governance. As a lawyer, she hopes to continue lending her skills, knowledge and experience to serve First Nation communities across Turtle Island.

Winonna is a student researcher at the Centre for Human Rights Research on the Calling for Justice and Re-Imagining Governance: The Rematriation of Indigenous Women’s Human Rights and the Obligation of All Governments project.
