Bashiru Salifu

Bashiru Salifu is⁠ a PhD Candi​date in Peace and Conflict Studies⁠ at the University of Manitoba, specializing in the intersection of⁠ Indigenous rights, land justice, and climate resilience. His⁠ current doc​toral project examines the Ogiek community’s struggle for ancestral land right​s in Kenya.

Before beginning his doctoral studies, Bashiru⁠ completed graduate studies at The‌ A⁠rc⁠tic University of Norway in‍ Peace and Conflict Transformation and Indigenous Studies. Previously, he conducted ethnographic fieldwork in Ethiopia, documenting how Borana pastoralists utilize customary Gadaa institutions⁠ and traditional ecological knowledge‍ to navigate climate-induced displacement.

Alongside his doctoral research, Bashiru has worked as‍ a lecturer in Indigenous Studies at The Arctic University‍ of Norwa⁠y’s​ Center for​ Sami Studies (S‌ESAM). He is the Co-Founder and Program Coordinator of the Resolve Alliance for Peace Education and Development and has served as a competition judge for Ethics Bowl Canada through the Manitoba Association for Human Rights.
